NY homeschool quarterly reports

Checked against 8 NYCRR 100.10 and NYSED's Home Instruction Q&A on 2026-10-07. Your district may have its own forms and process.

On or before each date you listed in the IHIP, file a quarterly report for each child. It must contain (100.10(g)):

  1. the number of hours of instruction during the quarter;
  2. a description of the material covered in each subject listed in the IHIP;
  3. either a grade in each subject or a written narrative evaluating the child's progress; and
  4. a written explanation if less than 80 percent of the course material planned in the IHIP for that quarter was covered in any subject.

Hours

The yearly total is 900 hours for grades 1-6 and 990 hours for grades 7-12, plus the substantial equivalent of 180 days (100.10(f)). NYSED recommends listing hours per subject in each quarterly report in the secondary grades (Q&A). Parents must keep attendance records and show them to the district if asked.

Picking the dates

You choose the dates in the IHIP; they must be "spaced in even and logical periods" (100.10(d)(3)). New York City suggests November 15, January 31, April 15 and June 30 (NYC Public Schools). The fourth report goes in with the annual assessment.

Making the 80% check easy

Write each quarter's share into the IHIP (for example "Math: chapters 1-3 in Q1"). Then each quarterly report just compares plan with actual. Where a subject falls short, add a sentence on why and how you'll catch up.

A re-usable quarterly report form

The kit's Form E has every required part, an optional hours-per-subject column, an 80% check box per subject and the explanation box. It comes in Word so you can re-use it each quarter. The hours log (Form F) keeps your running total.
